Getting started
How it works
The reference check process explained step by step.
The process in three steps
1. Raise a check
You enter the candidate's name, email and role, and spend one credit. The candidate receives an email asking for their consent.
2. Candidate consents and nominates referees
The candidate reviews what will happen, consents to us contacting their referees, and provides up to ten referee contacts. Once they submit, we invite each referee.
3. We verify and deliver a report
Each referee receives a link to complete a reference. Behind the scenes, we run five automated checks on every referee who responds:
- Referee email — we check the domain, mail records and registration age
- Employer record — we check the employer against the Companies House register
- Employment dates — we compare the candidate's claim against the referee's answer
- Email authenticity — we check that the reply genuinely came from this address, not forged
- Response — we confirm that a reply was received from the referee
The report is delivered to you as a permanent link. Each referee gets a result: ✓ Verified, ! Discrepancy or ✕ Not confirmed.
Who does what
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Employer | Raises the check, tracks progress, reads the report |
| Candidate | Consents or declines, nominates referees, replaces referees if needed |
| Referee | Completes the reference via a secure link — about 3 minutes |
